What is Second Career?
- Second career is a government program designed to help people who were laid-off due to the recession from closing, downsizing, declining or relatively low expected employment growth, with skills training to help them find jobs in high-demand occupations in Ontario and financial support. (This is not a loan; you don’t need to pay it back).
- Second Career helps people get the training or education they need to get a good job. It provides financial help to pay up to $28,000 – for things like:
- Tuition (up to $10,000 – which will be deducted from the full financial help)
- Books
- Living expenses
- Help caring for dependents
- Travel
- Transportation
- Disability supports
- other living and training costs
Am I eligible to receive a Second Career subsidy?
- If you are working part time, less than 20 hrs/week, you can still be eligible to apply for free funding from the government of Ontario.
- If you are on E.I. now, then you may be eligible to apply for free funding from the government of Ontario to go back to school and study another career.
- If you were on E.I. in the last three years and your benefits have expired, you may still be eligible to apply for free funding from the government of Ontario.
- If you were on maternity leave and for some satisfactory reason you were not able to return to your job, you may be eligible to apply for free government funding from the Government of Ontario.
What kinds of programs are accepted by the Second Career Strategy?
